I have a dimension e510 (desktop) that is about 1.5 years old. I was considering building my own machine at the time of purchase, but when I made the computer on dell.com and then priced all the parts from newegg, zipzoomfly etc (i did not have to pay for any software, i got it "free" from my college at the time) it was more expensive to build my own, especially because I had found a 40% off coupon for the dell and it came w/ the upgraded 19" LCD. I have never had any problems with the desktop although I put in a new video card ($100) and a new power supply ($100) (the old ones still worked).
I also have a laptop from 2002 that still runs great, inspiron 8200. The absolute only problem I had with that is I had to replace the keyboard, but keep in mind that the laptop was my only computer for 4.5 years and think about how much a college kid uses their computer.
I would say, price out a system (part by part) on ebay, newegg, zipzoomfly etc and compare it to the dell you want to buy, then go from there.
Good luck!
