Are you outside of the USA? As far as I know, all USA cars for 1996 had to be OBD-II compatible, which requires two O2 sensors - and a "standardized" (of which there are several) plug. On my 1994 SAAB (not OBD II), there are two non-standard plugs to connect a Tech-2 or other scanner; take a look at the base of the passenger seat for what you have, you may have to pull down the carpet from the crossmember at the base of the seat.
