need networking help (xp)

who are the networking geeks? Is Remote Desktop just naturally slow or what? I searched all the internet, some agree and some say it is just like being at the terminal. I set up a home network... tried to connect from work, both run XP pro. tried adjusting setings via client. it is very very slow. certain programs will lockup the RD, forcing me to disconnect. If that is a no go then how do I setup a VNC? thanks to any who respond, maybe even Mr. Scott P.?
