I suggest you narrow your needs list down. example - if you need class 3 towing, many vehicles listed here are out - and likely only a truck based SUV will do. If your growing family includes 3+ kids/dogs etc, then maybe you need a 7 seater - again this limits options.
If all you need is a comfortable larger car for 4 or less then look at 9-5 or XC70 (or V70). We currently have a 9-5 sportcombi(08), 9-7X(08), V70(99) and RR(94). With 3 kids, 2 dogs and a rabbit - the 9-5 gets the nod most times for our longer road trips - sometimes the 9-7x if we need to take the dogs.
The 9-7X is what it is. It is built in Ohio and I consider it a dressed up GM, but they have done a nice job on it. Mine is comfortable, fast and solid. It has good towing capacity. Reasonable fuel mileage for v8. It is certainly unique and priced much less than the two others you mention - especially so if you find you want a v8.
