It depends on where you are comfortable carrying your load. I have a 2002 9-5 Aero SW and with roof racks, I can comfortable get my wife, 16 mo-old daughter, and 2 dogs inside the car with me with plenty of room for our on-the-road gear. The end-of-journey stuff (luggage, beach chairs, etc.) goes on the roof, suitably weatherized if need be. I haven't had a need for a roof-top box, as of yet.
I see so many SUVs with roof-top boxes and bundled luggage that it makes me laugh - if they are so great at hauling people and gear, why the stuff on the roof? Most are not even full inside. Even with a roof rack, I get twice the mileage of a fully loaded SUV (roof box or not). If you want everything inside with you, you're looking at a minivan, plain and simple. Typically, the luggage area of a compact or midsized SUV is next to useless - not deep enough or oddly configured.
I doubt you could max-out (weight-wise) a 9-5 SW with only people & gear unless you are traveling cross-country. Heck, the IMBA Trail Care Crews (2 person teams that travel cross country teaching MTB trail maintenance & repair) us Subaru wagons with a simple roof rack and box, plus bike trays. And they're living on the road and carrying trail tools, signs, banners, clothes, riding gear, etc.
Efficiency (which used to be a Saab virtue) is the key.
