To add a bit more...

In addition to the auto industry, I also worked in the commercial truck industry on powertrains. I can tell you that when an outside supplier develops an engine as a modular component and the truck, transmission, engine, driveline, exhaust and emissions equipment are not developed concurrently as an integrated system, it creates a whole assortment of issues, especially when there are so many truck configurations that must be offered. Proper optimization for fuel efficiency, performance, and emissions requires systems integration and development from the beginning.
