I used a laptop exclusively for several years and did not have this issue at all. Since switching to a 22" monitor I get more eye strain. I've wondered if the 22" is too large height wise, i.e., the top of the monitor cannot go low enough. I have it on an adjustable stand as low as it will go, essentially bottom resting on the desk surface. A smaller monitor would allow more screen tilt which is more similar to a laptop. I’m testing this idea by sitting higher up for a few days.
The more closed your eyelids are the closer the situation is to reading which has higher blink rates that using the computer.
