My daughter and my Dad have hearing aids. Check all your options, and get a good audiologist; they can program them and tailor them specific for you. They also have loaners so you can try out different brands before committing; good since they are not equal. My daughter for instance tried the Sieman's, but we found they were too directional (she couldn't hear us well unless facing us). So we went with another brand even though she liked the sound of the Sieman's better.

Most have multiple settings, and if you are new to them, you'll be tweaking them for ages; another reason for a good audiologist. You'll want different settings for phone, office, and public (and possibly more like movies, etc.) There are also lots of options. Behind the ear are still better than in the canal from what I've heard; the simple reason is more electronics (so they usually have more options too). They are more noticable than canal ones, but worth it imho.

Bluetooth is nice (I got my dad the accessory for x-mas). You can sync them with your cellphone, and there are accessories to plug into headphone jacks. Downside is they still haven't truely made them bluetooth yet. You'll get a little box about the size of a standard cellphone that does it (at least with the Sieman's).

T-loop (FM modulator) is also a worthwhile feature... then you can buy a cheapo t-loop neck ring that plugs into standard headphone jacks like ipods, certain phones, etc. Cheap means $40 t-loop necklace versus $500 for my Dad's bluetooth. My daughter uses the FM modular in her classroom; the teachers wear the mic and the school has the equipment plus likes her ipod, so that made the most sense for her.

Top of the line aren't cheap.. just replaced my daughters for $5200. My Dad's were similar in cost last year. btw; he had in the canal ones, and switched to the over the ear. He had to do it at the time because only the over the ear ones could adjust for his loss. Also, get the extended warranty... both my dad's and my daughter's have broken before and needed replacement.
