More notes on Triumph engine & SAAB & key location

The 2stroke 96 (and 95 wagon) and subsequent V4 had column gear change and the ignition locked the gear lever in reverse. This idea was carried over in the 99 which had floor gear lever and hence the floor mounted lock. The sonnet (97) had steering lock as it had a floor gear lever - for the US market for which it was produced. The 9000 then also had a steering lock.
The original Triumph engine was matched with a freewheel gearbox on the early 99's which was also found on all 96's (in the early days because of the 2 stroke engines and later because people were used to changing gear without the clutch). The UK version of this engine was used in the Triumph (car company, not motorcycle company) Dolomite saloon and TR7 sports car and a V8 version was produced and used in the Stag sportscar where it proved particularly unreliable. The TR8 used the Rover (nee Buick small block) engine.
SAAB redesigned the Triumph engine to make it more robust; Triumph did not but did put a special cylinder hear on it for the awesome but unreliable Dolomite Sprint saloon which they track raced with some success. The Triumph engine ceased production with the TR7.
A real SAAB of course has freewheel - 95/96 early 99 and 97
