Question about how long for engine overheating (long) Posted by bender [Email] (#268) [Profile/Gallery] (more from bender) on Fri, 22 May 2009 17:59:47 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Just a question that I thought about after my experience today. I'd like to say that I do not need anyone telling me I probably overheated my engine, because I didn't (well I'm 99% sure..). Having said that, I drove the car a little bit after flushing the coolant for the first time (planning to do a couple more flushes), and when the thermostat opened, it chugged a bunch of coolant at once. I opened the hood and saw it was below the sensor, but still not ridiculously low. I drove back home slowly for no more than 1 mile, that's it. When I went to add coolant after a few minutes to let things cool, the coolant (water) level was low, but still above the expansion tank hose to the engine...Anyways, all is fine, but I'll make sure this never happens to me again.
Back to my question: How long must you drive, and how low must the coolant really be for an engine to overheat? Is this something that happens in a matter of minutes? Just curious. I assume in my case I was lucky that the level was still above the hose to the engine.
Thanks Saabers.
