Insurance is a major issue. If an insurer learns that a house is unoccupied, they will want to cancel coverage or have you agree to a different policy with changed coverages and premium. An occupied house attracts vandals, and other hazards, and insurers know it big time. The law and custom will vary from state to state. I doubt that a couple of visits per year will convince all insurers.

The bad news to you comes when they disclaim coverage on your making a claim. They don't track down policy holders to seek changes, they only collect the premium. Their claim may be that they were mislead when not informed the house became empty.

Since a house is a significant investment and asset, it is worth checking out rather than risk loss.
