that they had been firing toothpicks at the U.S.S. Constitution instead of hot/round shot.. chain and bar shot. Had they used the proper shot(ie toothpicks), 'Old Ironsides' would be known as 'Old Porcupine'.
Oak(white/red/live) is a very hard but more-over a tough hardwood.
Are there harder woods? Yup. Try 'American Hop-Hornbeam', denser? try Lignum vitae Janka 4500, and yes I have both in my basement as we type
If I had the 'jingle' I would have quarter-sawn white oak or vertical grain 'Hard Southern Pine' for flooring. Both of which with proper maintenance will last for generations.
