Have you looked at the Gas or Electric models? These smokers use propane, natural gas, or electricity to heat wood chips for smoke generation, but due to their heat source have better (at least it should be much better) temperature control. My bother-in-law has two of the Brinkman (I think) vertical style smokers which use charcoal for heat and wood chips for flavor smoke. He uses a digital thermometer to monitor internal temperature, and has to spend hours next to the smokers to properly flavor the meat.
These things are a disgusting mess afterwards too, although I am not sure a cleaner source of heat would make that much difference. I remember a "Dirtiest Jobs" segment involving cleaning the gas heated smoker at a Bar-B-Cue restaurant, and it clearly qualified for inclusion in the program! My B-I-L uses a personal recipe brown sugar based meat rub on pork ribs which contributes to much of the mess by carmelizing onto everything during the smoking process,
