IMO these are 3 keys to Saab's survival (all product related, I can't speak to finance issues).
1. Technology: Dire need for a better V6 option and restore the V6 option on the 9-3 too. Sure in 1980 when most other manufacturers had low tech engines and the likes of Infinity and Lexus hadn't emerged, an all 4 cyl. engine line up was fine.
30 years on, car weight has soared, emissions controls are tighter and the advent of variable valve and direct injection technology has changed the game.
A less thirsty 300HP+ V6 is needed badly. The current 2.8 is OK but way too thirsty. V8's and 6's in BMW's, Lexus and others get better mileage and are faster.
With out performance then any comparison to performance/luxury car marks is out...and with it sales.
Which leads us to the trannys-- are the 6 speed manuals shifting as good as the competition? I have a 6 speed auto and it may not be up for the job since Saab has to cut the maximum torque thru it in 1st and 2nd gear.
2. Sane pricing. In the US Saabs mostly sold for well below sticker price so they really need a sharp pencil and price it right from the get go... Consumers need more ammo in the justification of a Saab. Less people will be scared away if the sticker price is right for the market.
3. Lets just make a huge assumption that the 9-5 is good... No matter because if the 9-3 stays put then game over. A new 9-3 is needed w/in 2 years. The competition is moving ahead...
I'm not a doom and gloomer...I have an 08 Vert w/ the v6 and find it to be nice. Had Saabs in the past too. It's time!
And one last obvious shot and "K" tuned 9-3, at least 350hp, X drive etc... Not for selling a ton but as a flagship that the Norsemen still can kick *ss.
