Winter Tire Age - What's Safe?

Hi Guys,
Car is a '99 9-3, and I typically run 15" winter wheels/tires and 17" summer wheels/tires.
How old is too old for winter tires? I have Nokian WR tires (technically all season, but have winter duty rating) that are 5-6 years old. They have 4 winters on them (didn't use last season, I bought them new), yet the tread is OK. When not in use, they sat in my basement. Are these now too old to safely use, even if the tread and sidewalls look ok (ie no signs of cracking?).
If they are safe, maybe I'll use them this season. If not, I may simply get performance all seasons for use on my 17" wheels and just use them year round, and forgo my usual winter/summer swap routine - I can't really justify spending $1k on 2 sets of tires right now - but I need some tires for the winter either way. Performance all seasons that are decent in the snow would be a compromise, but should be OK in my area (Long Island).
Thanks!!
