While providing the marketting muscles (read: financing) to Saab in the 90's and 00's, GM made some serious mistakes in product planning for Saab. Getting rid of the hatchback/fastback design was a huge mistake. Sure, 70% of all US car buyers may prefer sedan to hatches, but owning 1/3 of 30% is much much better than owning 1% of 70%! There were very few competitors to Saab in the midsize (luxury) hatch market, a market segment that is now increasingly popular today as it is being rediscovered as the most versatile and family-friendly format: Infiniti FX, EX, BMW X6, Audi Q5, and even the mass selling Lexus RX and Toyota Venza. GM's strategy of pushing Saab into sedans and heavy SUV's just when both segments were about to enter severe decline, while ignoring Saab's own previous core segment of midsize 5-doors, was a disaster.
