1. I only have had one Saab, a 9-5 wagon, bought brand new in 2001, and still running strong; knock on wood.
2. Paid $31.5k, about $5k more than a Saturn V6 (W300) built on the same platform would have cost. Paid comparable amount of money for a Toyota Highlander Limited AWD 3 years later, also about $5k less than a comparably equipped Lexus RX built on the same platform at that time.
3. MSRP is irrelevent. BMW has been offering discount through lease deals for a decade and half, through inflated residual values. How else would you get to lease a $40k car for $350-400 a month on a 24-36mo lease, with no money down up-front? That's why people return those cars at lease end, and BMW takes a huge write-off when it's clogged up the gills with lease returns. IMHO, Saab's up-front discounting is more honest and less book cooking.
4. Where the wide gap between MSRP vs. real market clearing price hurts Saab is in the magazine comparos. Cars like the $30+k 9-5 should have done quite well against the likes of $25k Accords and Camry's in comparos, like VW Passats have been doing, but the $40k MSRP matches it up against the likes of BMW 3's and Audi A4's, which are much much smaller cars and hence have handling advantages. It never seemed to have occured to the magazine writers that Accord, Camry, 9-5, BMW 5 series and Audi A6 are in the same size class. Most casual car buyers are led down the wrong track and think the 3 series / A4 are midsize cars. The ones who actually did the research, like ourselves, tend to drive a hard bargain :-)
