While there is some marketing power associated with starting fresh + "shedding the GM crap", the NG9-5 (like it or not) is a key part to keeping the business viable + people employed. So obviously, a plan with the 9-5 is the first one to go for (even if it may be hard to sell a very expensive car that has a lot in common with a cheaper Buick/Opel). I think if GM won't let go of the 9-5, the only hope is to start fresh + get on to new technologies/platforms. Much harder for a car company to rise up from the ashes than eg Apple, because of the much greater development cost. Would need a very committed VC partner with deep pockets. Tough.
I have to say, I'm a little ambivalent wrt the NG9-5, but it does seem to be a good car even if it is very GM intertwined (see crash test link below). GM has sucked all the SAAB technology into the whole of GM so all GM cars should be much improved going forward.
