As previously mentioned on this board, Saab is not a stand alone company. Much of their technology, be it in the product or production, is now shared with other GM products, that they are keeping and planning future products around. So depending on what potential buyers want, and how much they are willing to pay, may or may not make sense for GM to sell, especially if it something that GM plans to use to differentiate its products in the market.
Big deal if GM gets a couple of hundred million more by selling Saab than shutting it down if it costs it billions and billions of dollars in future sales, especially if they do not have immediate real needs for any cash.
In the past American car companies (and lots of other American companies) have been criticized for not taking a long term view of their business, and being too short term focused. Here is a case where they might be taking an appropriate long term view, and they are taking a criticized.
