I couldn't agree more, and I'd even extend that to any other cables.
My biggest peeve is with the high-priced component cables. I think that they purposely make the RCA connectors small, so it takes more force to get them on, so you think that it's making a better connection. All the while stressing the solder and other joints on the board inside your expensive TV or other component while you put them on or pull them off.
(and I had to use these kind of cables setting up my Mom's new 42" HDTV this Christmas. Worst part was on that TV, the connections go in perpendicular to the LCD screen, so you can't provide any sort of pushback to help the connectors together.)
Also, the high-priced cables tend to be thick and stiff, You'd think that means they were shielded better, but I haven't found that to be true. I had some HDMI cables picking up noise from AC cables that were run alongside them, causing my HDTV to remind me, every five seconds, what input was being used on the set...
The thicker cables are also a lot harder to route through cabinetry, walls, etc.
I'm a fan of XTreme Mac's XTremeHD cables, and also Belkin (yes, that Belkin) cables. Reasonably priced at around $20 for a 6 footer. You can buy cheaper, but I like to have somewhat of a name brand. You can also find Belkin & XtremeHD on Amazon at a discount.
Don't waste money on costly cables. The cheaper ones work every bit as well.
Oh - one reason that the store salesperson will hit you up for the pricy cables: They're paid on commission. The lowest commission comes on the set or component itself. Much higher commissions come on the accessories, and especially the "extended warranty". But if you want to reward the salesperson for working with you, and getting you a decent price on the unit, buy the extended warranty. Almost all of that goes into their pocket...
