Keep the Blu-ray... All Blu-ray players will upconvert standard DVDs to 720p or 1080i (& maybe 1080p). So, you already have an upconverting DVD player!
Just remember, it's STILL a 720x480 (480i/p) signal coming out of the DVD disc. nothing will change that. Going up to 1280x720 (720p) or 1920x1080 (1080i/p) means "interpolating" what the extra lines should be.
With the BluRay player, and an AVR, you have (or should have) a choice of where to do the upconverting. One unit or the other may do it better than another. So, if the AVR does a better job (and it's all subjective - watch them both, and pick the one you like), have the Blu-ray player send a DVD out at 480, and then the AVR upconverts it to 1080. Or maybe the Blu-ray does it better...
I haven't tried a DVD in my Blu-ray player yet, but I found that my HD-DVD player did a lousy job of upconverting DVD to 1080i, while the upscaling DVD player did a much better job.
