I think its SAABs fault. Or some combination of SAAB and GM. The problem is that building a great car (while of utmost importance to anyone on this site) is only one factor is being a succesful car company.

Take range rover or BMW for example, most range rovers bought in the USA only see pavement and have a lousy reliability record, yet they sell. BMWs may be performance machines but how many drivers take advantage of that, and BMWs come with expensive maintenance expectations.

What all the high end brands have been able to do is to make thier brand something more than the value proposition of the car. Maybe its SAABs Sweedishness but for SAAB the value propostion IS the car (again compelling to us but not sufficient). SAAB (in the USA anyway) needs to find the SAAB way of pumping the ego of the new SAAB customer. To get the new car guy to drop somewhere nearing $50k on the car and be happy about it.

Since I will never be in any position to do that I dont matter to that math. I will wait as long as it takes until I can afford the car and love the new car guy and SAAB for making it possible.

In the end it is SAABs responsibility to market its fine product, and if that fails it will hardly be the first or last time an excellent product failed because of poor marketing.
