The big wheel thing is a "fashion trend" these days. Bigger wheels do look nicer in many instances, especially if the wheels are a of a design that looks good with the design of the car.

The upside is you can get better handling, but it's not something you necessarily get the most out of on the street, although you'll get quicker steering response. However, you can get most of the same advantage with stocky, ultra-high performance tires.

The downside is that the big tires that go on 18 and 19-inch rims tend to be expensive, so instead of spending, say, $500-$600 for a set of four at replacement time you get to spend more like $800 to $1,000. Or more. Also, unless you get high-end, expensive rims, you'll probably increase unsprung weight, which has a negative effect on ride and handling. And, if you live in an area with less than great roads, the lower profile tires protect your (expensive) rims far less than the higher profile tires on the 16" rims.

As others note, you need to have to total diameter of the rim and tire be the same as with your 16" ones, otherwise your speedo will be off. See the link below.

With a Miata I might go to 17" with some sticky tires, but no bigger. And don't forget to make sure the tires will fit width-wise without rubbing at full lock and full suspension compression. The Miataet site is the Miatsa equivalent of Saabnet, so you'll get some great info there.
