I've seen many more speed traps since the economy turned sour. I have a feeling the local municipalities around where I live would rather fleece their residents with speeding tickets then tighten their belts. I've been driving for 18 years, and before last year I haven't had a ticket in a decade. Last year I got 2. One was for 41 in a 25. The second was from a red light camera.

I took the first to court. There were about 200 other people their from that sting. The cop offered anyone who was doing under 2x the posted limit a reduced fine and no points. Over 2x the posted limit was 1 point (very minor) and a reduced fine. Clearly this was just a money maker.

The second fine came in the mail from the city of Wilmington DE. Running a red light in Wilmington will cost you about $80. The fine made a point of saying it was issued by the parking authority, and had no bearing on your driving record. I just paid that one. Wilmington is a dump and I never plan to return. I was only there for a funeral anyway.

After this happened I bought a radar detector. I wouldn't have helped with the two tickets I got, but I drive alot in NJ, and that state pretty much exclusively uses radar. Since I bought the detector, it has alerted me to many traps in NJ. It was the best $40 I ever spent. Nothing feels better than cruising down the highway, hearing it beep, slowing down to the posted limit and smiling at the officer on the side of the road as you pass.
