Alonso, in a Ferrari, wins in Bahrain Posted by JohnA [Email] (#426) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JohnA) on Sun, 14 Mar 2010 07:50:41 In Reply to: The Ten Best Formula One Drivers, JohnA [Profile/Gallery] , Sat, 13 Mar 2010 06:08:01 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My former (sadly) Saab mechanic said about Alonso that he's an exception to the rule that F1 cars are driven smoothly and seamlessly. Alonso's is a rock 'n roll style of driving - hard on the car.
My biggest surprise in being driven by a pro on a race course in a highly
modified 5-series Bimmer was how smoothly everything went. We'd go barreling into a corner at high speed and with a combination of braking
and downshifting the car would be brought to heel until the apex, when
it was (smoothly) booted out with acceleration and a fast series of upshifts.
When I mentioned this to my mechanic, he brought up the Alonso exception.
He added that Jackie Stewart had driven an F1 course with a ball on a
plate in the cockpit that never came off - a familiar exercise among
driver-ed instructors.
