The type mower - tractor you chose depends on what you want to do. Just about anything will do for mowing, although zero turns can be an issue on sloping yards, they want to turn or slide down hill. Nobody uses them on the hilly yards in our sub. The cutting width depends on how many things you have to mow around and how fast you want to get done. Less than 40 inches is small for an acre.
For snow blowing, tilling, etc you need a tractor that has mounting points for accessories and pto provisions. Many of your entry level mowers are lightly built and can not take accessories although they can pull lawn carts, sweepers, etc. Hence mowers for mowing and tractors for more serious stuff. If you have a lot of snow, a snow blower, wheel weights, and chains work better than plowing, especially if you get several heavy accumulating snows a year.
Consumers magazine evaluates mowers, although they don't go into much depth. Many of the lighter mowers and tractors are made by MTD and use the same engines and transaxles. The transmissions are either mechanical or hydrostatic, with hydrostatic more expensive but offering continuously variable speed. If you don’t know just what you will need, start with a used one, you can always trade later on. 10 years old is not that old.
