All of the box store new tractors really are lihtly built. You can go to a tractor dealer and when you start to get past $6,000 start to get something that is better deigned.
I have a Honda 4518 which you could find now used for anywhere from 500 to 2000. Has been very reliable, water cooled motor, strong mower deck and hydrostatic transmission. But the cost of parts is high and the grass catcher has been beatup and Honda has not had any parts for it for years.
That issue made me look around again and I have a John Deere 318. They are very well designed and built, hydro everything including power steering and hydraulic lifts. Parts are availlable and great support site called Weekend Freedom Machines. It is a brute, weighs almost 100 pounds, sold new for about $7,000 can be found for prices from $1000 to $3000 and will be worth a lot of what you paid in the future. You cannot compare current JD with this series of garden tractors. There is also a 322 which has a 3 cyl Yanmar gas engine or a 332 which is a 3 cylinder Yanmar diesel.
Any way that is the direction I went and I am proud to have the JD 318 next to the 9-3 convertible in the garage.
