Sarah,
I haven't looked at the new 9-5 details yet but I think that you have your terminology "reversed". The original 92 was not a transverse engine car. The 92, 93, 95, 96, Sonnet 97, 90, 99, and Classic 900, all the cars Saab made through 1993 (and '94 CV), EXCEPT for the 9000 (which came out in 1986 and was Saab's FIRST transverse engine car), had in-line engines not transverse engines. That goes through the very first 2 strokes, the Ford V4, Triumph consortium B engine, B201 and B202 engines. All except the 9000 had in-line power plants. Saab went exclusively to transverse engines after the last Classic 900 rolled off the assembly line. I haven't seen the details of the new 9-5 but if it has an in-line power unit, that would be a return to Saab's roots and a big deal. Apart from old Saabs there are very few examples of in-line power units in front wheel drive cars in automotive history (compared to transverse examples). Saab was a maverick in that regard from day one. I am a Classic 900 enthusiast (I currently have 7) so I know that an in-line engine FWD car can be as good as or better than any transverse engine FWD car. I believe that the new 9-5 has some exotic, high tech., all wheel drive system. I'll read up on it if I ever have the time. I prefer to live in the past, the future is too busy for me.
