The 99 & then the C900 placed the transmission underneath the engine. So the crankshaft is at a higher elevation vs. other cars. The tilted engine block allowed a lower hood-line. Imagine the hood would have needed to be a few inches higher to allow the block to be upright.
Besides, wasn't it developed out of a Ricardo/Triumph V8?
I used to have a BMW 2002 which also had cylinders at a 45-degree angle, although the transmission location was normal for a front-engine-rear-drive car.
