need to clear up some misconceptions Posted by TML [Email] (#2212) [Profile/Gallery] (more from TML) on Fri, 23 Apr 2010 10:14:27 In Reply to: Soldering Iron Recommendation?, Rod [Profile/Gallery] , Fri, 23 Apr 2010 05:16:51 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Some misconceptions are presented in this thread. Just because a soldering iron has a control knob on it does NOT mean it's temperature regulated or controlled. Ones that are actually temperature controlled show temperature on the scale, not arbitrary numbers from 1 to 5. The one shown in the linked picture may be power regulated, but it is not the same thing. Temperature will vary depending on load, which the power regulated iron will not be able to detect. Conversely, some irons with no control knob at all actually ARE temperature regulated; they are fixed, but selectable through using different tips. (Weller makes this type, I have seen it). If you're just doing basic soldering, this is best combination of cost and performance - get a tip for about 700degF. If you want to get the continuously variable temperature control type with the knob, then Hakko is a better value than Weller. The 1-5 knob type really is near the bottom of the scale in quality.
