Note that you can often do MORE damage to a boardor compnents by going in with a low temp that heats up everything in the area slowly to a temp where you can solder, vs. going in with a high temp iron that hits just the point in question and finishes it off fast. If I have any doubts, I tend to lean towards high heat and fast (and put a heat sink on components that you can to defer heat).
On specific irons, Weller is great, lasts for ever. If you are really only doing the heavy wire soldering that you mentioned, a big Weller is fine. If you expect to do board level work, get something small that you can finesse.
