Yeah, I get it. I'm not saying GM is blameless, especially with garbage like the 9-7x, I'm just saying that -- yes -- SAAB probably did lose thousands per car over several years.
SAABs simply weren't competitive in the US market for the price GM initially placed on their vehicles here. My '01 9-3 SE had a new sticker of almost $35K and they had to discount it to $26K for me to buy it -- a $9K discount. Ditto for my '06 9-3 SC -- a sticker of almost $30K and out the door for under $23K -- a $7K discount. I don't care what GM failed to do to enhance SAAB, let me know how GM was supposed to make money on a low-volume brand when the market dictated Camry / Accord pricing.
The bottom line is that GM bought a small-volume manufacturer producing a limited line of vehicles in a very high cost country. Now maybe GM could've turned SAAB into VW and made millions of cars a year but I doubt it. The brand reputation is what it is and was what it was.
I seriously doubt SAAB would've done much better without GM's involvement, though SAAB 'purists' would've been a whole lot happier. And I guess we'll see how well Spyker does.
