I have used a number of Utilitech utility pumps in my watergarden. They all work good for about a year and then fail. I don't think they are rated for continious use (I had mine on a timer that would go on about 6am and off about 9pm each day).
What I DID have luck with was the Utilitech Waterfall pump. This thing is a monster. On the good side it only cost me about $130 at Lowes. It pumps a TON of water (forgot exactly how many gallons/minute... but it is MORE than enough for any size water garden). It also shuts off automatically if it has no water.
On the bad side, the outlet connection is 1 inch (opposed to what it said on the box that you only need a garden hose). However, I was able to use a PVC connector to bring it down to 3/4 where I then used a 3/4 hose. Another bad is it is shiney (vs the flat black of the utility pumps), so you can see it easier if you have it exposed. Finally it is a bit tall (about 14 inches maybe?). Not sure if this last one would pose a problem for you or not.
Hope this helps,
Daniel
