Mac vs PC matters less at many schools

Many schools support both platforms and with MS Office and Acrobat files are generally pretty interchangeable. What does your son prefer to use?
We got daughter #1 a Macbook when she started college fours years ago. The school had equal deals on both Macs and PCs, campus IT supported both, and she liked Macs better so we got the Mac. We're all Macs at home, including my home-based business. (Remember that if you install Parallels or Boot Camp and you can run most Windows programs without any trouble.)
The MacBook stood up to all four years of her abuse. We got the AppleCare protection plan, which she used twice, both due to accidentally dropping the poor thing and damaging the hard drive. No issues on service at all. Now, almost 5 years later she still has it, but it's having issues --the screen hinge (a MacBook weak point) and the CD/DVD drive is erratic. But it still works and we video chat weekly. She gets a new one at Christmas.
She was a science major and there were only a couple things she couldn't do on the Mac, but we never loaded Parallels or Boot Camp. The need just wasn't that great and there was access to PCs in her department.
Macs typically cost more than PCs, but schools often have deals that make them about the same. Another option are the refurb units at Apple.com. They are like new, have a full warranty, you can get AppleCare and save some money. My last 3 business laptops (PowerBooks or MacBook Pros) have come from there and had zero issues in hard daily use and lots of travel.
However, I recommend the MacBook Pro over the regular MacBook. It has a metal case and is a bit sleeker, as well as more powerful and also has a FireWire port for faster data transfer.
