The turbo is there to increase mileage while maintaining decent performance. The small displacement engine gets better mileage, with turbo comeing into play for short intervals like merging, passing, and keeping up with traffic Kind of sounds like a hybrid, just substitute turbo for battery.
Saab sold CS's in the mid 90's with a turbo and no boost gauge or other indication it had a turbo. There were owners that did not know it had a turbo or knew what a turbo was, they just knew it drove nice.
