There is nothing German sounding about the name "Haier." The anglicizing of the Chinese company's name took place almost two decades ago, for its export products, mostly sold in the US. As for Chinese perception of "German engineering" . . . perhaps still holds true among people who never owned one previously, or owned any car at all . . . just like in the US: German car ownership rate corresponds to regions of low car ownership rate (coastal metropolitan areas).
