Besides the point about Germans cars being mechanically engineered to drive in the unique Autobahn environment (which the American cities and suburbs do not resemble), I'd also agree with you on "can AFFORD," if "can AFFORD" also includes a component about affording not to have the car from time to time, and can afford the time to take the car in for repair more often. Besides mechanical unreliability, the long distance between dealerships is another reason why German cars are less popular outside the major cities.
BTW, I'm at all saying German cars are less desirable or not as valuable. Value is subjective. Different people derive different values from ownership of any objects. One of my cars is a convertible, which obviously delivers very poor value in terms of transportation utility alone. German cars have a much more "toy" component to it than transportation device engineering per se. To argue that German cars are better engineered as a transportation device is like trying argue that a $50 bottle of Champaign is better at alleviating thirst than a $1 bottle of spring water just because people pay more to drink it. The value of the Champaign has little to do with the water content in it; likewise, what makes German cars chic has little to do with their mechanical engineering or electrical engineering content.
