All cars have stuff that wears out, so if you're talking a used Toyondaruzdassan for <$5K it probably has the mileage so it will need some things done. IMHO, they generally hold up pretty well mechanically, but physically (body, interior) they seem a bit stretched as they get to say, 150K miles. And the seats are bad from Day One.
Saabs at the same price aren't a lot different. But like other Euro cars, they need to be more aggressively maintained than Japanese cars so the maintenance history is more important. Japanese cars seem to work OK even if the service history is sketchy.
We only buy used cars, and look for good service histories. That's worked well on our current set of 4 Saabs which run well and reliably. All were bought used, with known histories, at 40K, 91K, 138K and 148K.
The "appliance factor" is another issue. Japanese cars are good transportation. They work fine but mostly feel dumbed down and just aren't much fun to drive. But this is what most people prefer.
All that said, I find our cars need normal maintenance and replacing of wear items, and stuff that dies like it would on any other car. Nothing all that dramatic.
