Road trip, western migration? GPS & Nascar

Took a road trip from CO to MI. Started on Thursday and could not beleive the number of U-Haul type trucks heading west. All the way though Nebraska and Iowa there was one every couple of minutes all day long. Are that many people really moving west?
I94 between Chicago and Detroit should be on the NASCAR circuit except the drivers would probably find it much more frightening than being on the track. Are you people mental? And I thought roads with 1,000 foot drop offs, no gardralls or shoulder were scary. Sheesh!
Alright, I have to confess to being a throwback and I really love using good old fashioned maps, marine & aronautical charts, etc. My wife insisted on buying a Garmin GPS for our car, while I bought a new Rand McNally Road Atlas. We get to the outskirts of Chicago and traffic comes to a virtual standstill. So the GPS comes on and tells us there is an "extreme delay" and then says the road is closed. It wants us to get off at the next exit onto surface streets. I think "oh crap" that's the last thing I want to do on a holiday Friday afternoon. Anyway we decide to do it. So this thing starts taking us down all these side streets--we ended up driving at least 40 miles all the way through Chicago and into Gary, IN no less. We occassionally caught glimpses of the highway and it was at a complete standstill. Come to find out later there was a four semi accident that had the highway still closed completely 6 hours later. I could have never done that with a map or known what was going on. So I guess I'm going to have to concede GPS has it's place and I'm going to need it living in the Detroit area. Sigh...
