Supposedly, it is where the piston is rocking within the cylinder, not going exactly straight, up and down. I have a GM 8.1L engine that slaps for a few minutes after start up until it is warmed. It sounds like a diesel. That engine has large diameter pistons with short skirts and I've heard that since the pistons, rods and cylinders are each different types of metal their heat expansion rates are different so slapping happens until everything is equally hot.
In the beginning it worried and bothered me a lot. I called and complained and they added a year onto my GMPP for free. Some folk got the power train warranty extended to 100K miles. I considered that a nice gesture from GM since I bought it used and they didn't have to do anything. In the end, I believe, the consternation over GM's piston slapping engines was nothing but a bunch of class action lawyers trying to scare up money. I'm still rolling with 120K miles and it will pull a trailer up a hill like a freight train.
