As others have said, a piston skirt (that has a loose fit in the cylinder) "slaps" the cylinder wall when the piston changes direction at the end of its stroke.
We had a 92 NA 2.3 9000 that had piston slap on #1 cylinder. From what I understood this was something that happened on that vintage engine. A possible explanation is the water pump outlet was aimed directly at the #1 cylinder wall, chilling the cylinder in cold weather and in general cooling the #1 cylinder more than the others. It was not clear whether the #1 cylinder was intentionally assembled with larger tolerance, or the slap was a result of wear or both. Later years had a deflector built into the water pump - block coupling that prevented cold coolant from directly impinging on the coolant side of the cylinder wall.
