9-5 with mismatched front + rear tires as purchased. Dunlops front, Pirelli P6 back. Rainy conditions, rutted highway, front tires hydroplaned a few times while back did not. No problem at all to regain control of steering... Eased off gas + grip returned. Car never went far off track - I could just feel the loss of grip + looseness...
so I'm pretty comfortable with the good tires on back philosophy. That said, in comparison to the old Nokian NRH's on the c900 (which are seemingly impossible to hydroplane, even now at end of life), both tires are poo + I'm getting a whole new set of 4 matching, better tires... unfortunately, the sag induced toe/camber issue common to the 9-5's has precipitated this sooner than intended - I shredded one of the dunlops! Summer tires, winter tires, and suspension work, all in one go!
anyway, I agree. Tires are not the place to economize!
