We need a new cannister vacuum cleaner. In 30+ years of marriage we have owned two vacuums, an Electrolux (made before the breakup of the company) and the current Elektra-Pure. Both were great vacuums and both needed to be replaced due to failure of relatively minor maintenance items that were no longer being produced. The maker of Elektra-Pure has even stopped making bags for the vacuum! I should have bought more last year when they were still available.
Today the cord rewind mechanism on the Elektra-Pure broke, and although I can buy a new one for only $37, the total unavailability of replacement bags makes this a foolish purchase. Very soon this machine will need to be recycled regardless if the cord rewinds or not.
Hence my question. Who currently makes the best cannister vacuum? Miele? Bosch? Aerus? Sanyo? Any significant changes since this question was last asked in 2003 (I did a search)?
Thanks,
