Since it has to do a bunch of functions: haul visitors, luggage, groceries, etc.: I'd recommend station wagon of some sort (Preferably with a jumpseat in the back). Mercedes and Volvos had these and they are very flexible. We've got a 1989 300TE that is equally well suited to hualing a bunch of kids around, or going to home depot.

In 1990, MB made the 300TE an AWD vehicle and the 124 chassis is one of the best Mercedes ever made. They made that model up to 1993,IIRC. Volvo XV-70 and XC-70 also has the 3rd row of seating if IIRC.
