Sure, but as with anything conflicting comments Posted by bender [Email] (#268) [Profile/Gallery] (more from bender) on Fri, 23 Dec 2011 09:58:05 In Reply to: Stress Worries, sondeen [Profile/Gallery] , Fri, 23 Dec 2011 08:11:52 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
always follow. No, I do not have a M.S and B.S in Mechanical Eng, so good for you. However, from the advice that I've received it's been mixed, and always is. I don't know who to listen to anymore and I am certain another mech eng will give me mixed results.
I've resorted to using my common sense in that when cars are NOT stored (and, 99.9% arent stored?) no one ever bothers to worry about suspension and the rest of the stuff that people are worried about when they store a car. It's just plain silly in my opinion to worry about the suspension of a car that's stored for a relatively short period of time if it's not being driven and thus, nothing is happening to the suspension. When it is driven on the other hand (say, during that period of time which it would have been stored) it's hitting irregulatiries on the road, road bumps, weight shift etc...and all is well. In fact, I would say all being equal, during that same period of time the suspension of a car that is stored suffers less 'wear' than the equivalent car being driven for the same period of time on the road. What can possibly happen to a car that's not doing anything? Nothing. The only thing I can think of is perhaps some suspension bits (whatever those are) not being 'moved' around to be kept in a working condition.
Tires? I couldn't care less. I pump them up to 45 PSI and that does it. Tires nowadays don't really get flat spots like they used to, especially if they have a higher air pressure. If that's so concerning, one can take a crappy set of tires, mount them on steelies and put those on the car.
Lastly, as far as "stress" goes, thanks for the insight, I'm sure you know what you're talking about. I'm not an engineer and I'm still using my common sense in that, as in the foregoing, cars that are never stored are never jacked up (except when at the mechanic) and no one ever seems to worry about anything. Why? Because cars are designed to sit on their four wheels, not to be jacked up for extended periods of time. If they weren't designed for the former, then people would regularly worry about it. Whatever the truth is in this matter, I'll keep the car on the ground for I know in that position the only things that can suffer are: the tires (don't care, never had any issues) and apparently, the suspension (really don't know what 'suffers' and I haven't experienced any issues whatsoever. When and if I does one day, I'll fix it plain and simple. I'd rather that than have other worries about 'Did I jack up the car right? I hope I didn't do anything wrong...Is the frame bending? Maybe? Maybe not...?" while I'm away for two to three years). Is this a different story when storing a car for three years? Maybe, maybe not. I don't know. All I can say is having had the worries about doing anything bad to the frame of the car, this would only exacerbate how I would feel knowing I'd be doing it for such an extended period.
My old post regarding this very issue
