I'm not sure what your mechanic's price was for a Graf water pump, but I can get one for about $60, which includes a one-year/12,000 mile warranty. I imagine that your mechanic is covered by a similar warranty from his supplier for the defective part.
I bought a genuine VW water pump for $72 (wholesale price, retail is $90) plus a $50 core charge that is returned only with a genuine VW part (recall that you used to have one, i.e. the original part on the car). Note that this part is called "remanufactured", but I could not see any difference from a new part; the parts counter guy told me that they keep the housing and replace everything else - the mounting surfaces on mine were freshly machined and appeared as new. Also note that the VW gasket (included in the price) is a piece of thin aluminum, vs. the fiber composite part that comes with most water pumps - trickier to mount, but is not going to deteriorate.
