Horses on a diet? They are more like ponies!

Is it just me or the trend is indeed happening.
Test-drove a Grand Cherokee the other day, while helping a buddy to car-shop. A plain-jane Laredo with a 4.7V8 (previous gen). Knowing how the same engine performed in the old WJ (1999-04), I expected a bit of vigour. But the rig felt like having a 3.7V6 in there. Then we tried the new GC Hemi. While certainly having lots of power, it did not feel its claimed 390HP, more like 250-ish old schoold ones.
Now, SAABs. A 92 2.3 9000 with TCS was insanely quick - and felt it. While a 9-3SS with a 2.8 does not.
So I started to pay attention. Quite a few cars, that were supposed to have very strong engines and numbers/feel to match, just did not perform as I expected them to.
Anyone else having the same impression or it is my internal meter going wacky?
