If referring to recent explosion at GM Tech Center Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Sat, 14 Apr 2012 08:01:39 In Reply to: The difference between a battery and gas tank, BobS, Fri, 13 Apr 2012 19:28:06 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The battery was undamaged as it did not explode (GM Press Release). The explosion was caused by gasses which had vented out of the battery during extreme duty testing. Since it occurred in a former internal combustion engine test cell two important forensic engineering questions are:
- Who turned OFF or disabled the ventilation system which captured and safely exhausted all combustible gasses when this cell was used for engine testing.
- Who installed electrical components in this cell which did not meet NFPA Explosion Proof (means sealed against intrusion of any combustible gasses) or Intrinsically Safe (means no sparks can be created) ratings.
