Way to clean an EGR without engine removal Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Thu, 24 May 2012 09:55:37 In Reply to: Any way to clean an EGR without removal?, Finch, Thu, 24 May 2012 09:15:33 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
This seems to be a common problem on Nissan engines; my father's Infinity I30 had this issue last fall. You will probably have to remove the EGR valve to clean the EGR tube, as carbon builds up and hardens from the heat - not quite enough pressure to make a diamond, but you get the idea. Using the linked procedure, it is possible to remove the EGR valve without removing the engine - you have to take a bit of length off of one of the studs with a hacksaw or a grinder.
Nissan is not the only car with this issue - I had to perform a similar procedure on my Audi A4. For a cleaning "brush", I used a piece of steel cable chucked into a portable drill.
