My AMC Eagle has one Posted by JerseySaab [Email] (#666) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JerseySaab) on Fri, 25 May 2012 08:13:34 In Reply to: Digital carburetor - I love that! :) (n/m), Siegfried, Fri, 25 May 2012 06:48:18 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My '85 Eagle wagon has a computer-controlled electronic carb, and that system is is a royal PITA to work on. It was the last gasp effort of meeting 1980s emission standards with a carburetor. The amount of attendant vacuum plumbing is astonishing to say the least. (It contrasts mightily to the tidy fuel injection setup on a similar vintage Saab.)
AMC actually had some early experience with fuel injection. They were planning to offer electronic fuel injection in the 1957 Rambler Rebel, which even with a 4-barrel carb was the fastest U.S. production car of the time except for the fuel-injected Corvette. But reliability problems caused AMC to cancel at the last minute. They went so far as to print a detailed description of how the system works in the owner's manual (I have a copy).
That was a Bendix system that was ultimately sold to Bosch who refined it to use in European cars years later. (I believe that is the electronic injection system that found its way to the VW Squareback wagon and others in the late 1960s.)
